Regional Industrial Fuel Switch to CNG

Port Townsend Paper Corporation | Port Townsend, WA | Paper & Textile Mills

XNG partnered with Port Townsend Paper to replace fuel oil with natural gas, delivering a major emissions reduction and supporting broader CNG adoption across the Pacific Northwest industrial ecosystem.

The Problem

Port Townsend Paper sought to reduce emissions and modernize fuel use at its paper production facility. Historically dependent on fuel oil, the plant’s emissions were becoming increasingly out of step with environmental goals and upcoming regulations. Lacking pipeline gas access, the company required a mobile, high-volume solution that could support year-round operations and deliver measurable sustainability benefits.

The Solution

XNG established a mobile CNG supply chain via its new Satsop Compression Station in less than 12 months from inception to the start of deliveries. XNG now delivers over 700,000 MMBtu annually to the mill providing essential fuel flexibility. The Compression Station, and customer upgrades were completed on time and on budget enabling the Mill to meet its goals ahead of schedule. The resulting system delivered cleaner-burning energy for process heat while providing a scalable model for future regional deployments.

The Results

Over 700,000 MMBtu/year delivered

Compression station and client site completed in 11 months

Switching fuels significantly cut Port Townsend Paper’s emissions, with carbon reductions continuing over the 10-year contract. The committed volume enabled XNG to invest in regional infrastructure, speeding up adoption by other industrial clients. The project showcased how mobile CNG can serve high-demand facilities off-pipeline, delivering cleaner energy at scale without delay.
