FAQs
Natural Gas 101
Why switch to natural gas?
Save money.
Switching to natural gas can save you up to 40% in energy costs versus alternatives such as oil and propane. Natural gas has 95%+ burner efficiency and no waste disposal costs, no routine maintenance, and limited to no annual downtime. Delivered natural gas can save facilities 25% or more compared to most conventional fuels—even biomass. We price our natural gas on a published index cost based on the pipeline. In many cases we meet or even beat the price of pipeline gas. And just like a pipeline, our customers pay only for the gas they use, not what is in the trailer.
Reduce carbon emissions.
According to the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA), natural gas emits almost 30% less CO2 than oil, 45% less than coal, virtually no sulfur dioxide (SO2), and far fewer nitrogen oxides (NOX). As the cleanest-burning fossil fuel on the market, it’s a highly efficient and environmentally responsible energy source.
Be safe.
Natural gas is non-toxic and lighter than air, so CNG and LNG dissipate quickly in the event of a leak or spill. It also has a very narrow flammability range, significantly reducing fire risk.
Support domestic energy.
About 90% of U.S. natural gas is produced domestically, with the rest coming from Canada. The U.S. is the world’s largest natural gas producer, with enough supply to meet demand for over 100 years.
What is compressed natural gas?
CNG is natural gas compressed to less that 1% of its volume at atmospheric pressure and stored in cylinders. It can replace gasoline, diesel, and propane. CNG is colorless, odorless, non-corrosive, non-combustible, and non-toxic, mostly made of methane. According to the EPA, it has a narrow flammability range and dissipates quickly if released, requiring no environmental cleanup. CNG is clean-burning, inexpensive, and domestically abundant.
Is CNG right for my company?
CNG is typically recommended for customers using 75,000 gallons or more of heating oil or propane annually, or with smaller or seasonal energy load profiles. We will work with you to assess your suitability based on energy needs, infrastructure, and location.
The Virtual Pipeline™
What is the “virtual pipeline”?
The “virtual pipeline” is a clean energy system that connects customers to natural gas through a network of pipeline terminals, trucks, and on-site decompression stations—no need for physical pipeline infrastructure.
How does XNG's Virtual Pipeline™ work?
1. Connect to Pipeline
We connect directly to interstate pipelines, ensuring reliable access at the lowest cost.
2. Transportation
We compress natural gas into high-capacity trailers for transport, delivery, and storage—eliminating the time and cost of on-site filling.
3. Connect to Customer
We monitor your supply levels and dispatch new trailers before you need them. Gas is safely delivered and decompressed through our custom-built skids.
Is the Virtual Pipeline™ safe for my facility and employees?
Yes. We follow struct safety protocols and maintain full compliance with:
- NFPA 52
- OSHA
- State and local codes
We also provide:
- Site-specific emergency response plans
- Community and first responder training
- Complete documentation for site operations
Operations & Support
Is natural gas suited for my business?
We conduct a detailed site assessment and fuel usage audit to determine whether natural gas is right for your operation. We primarily serve industrial and large commercial customers using at least 100,000 gallons of oil or propane annually, and companies burning solid fuels like biomass or coal.
What industries does XNG serve?
Industries we serve include:
- Manufacturing – Industrial and commercial
- Healthcare – Hospitals, pharmaceuticals, medical facilities
- Education – Colleges, universities, research institutions
- Data Centers
- Food Processing – Meat packing, packaged foods
- Agricultural – Greenhouses, food crops, grain operations, fisheries, dairies, creameries, livestock farms
- Municipalities & Utilities – Water treatment, waste management, public works
- Paper & Textile Mills – Paper production, pulp, textiles
- Asphalt Production
What do I need to do to convert my facility?
If you have a boiler, we help modify or replace systems to support natural gas. We install:
- Reinforced trailer parking
- Decompression and monitoring systems
- HDPE piping
- Utility interconnections
How do you structure project development plans?
We begin with a feasibility study at your facility. Then, our Solutions Group prepares a full development plan including the following, working closely with your team:
- Budget and construction estimates
- Supply strategy and pricing
- Equipment and logistics
- Site engineering and permitting
- Safety and compliance planning
Do you offer a customer portal?
Yes. Customers have access to a dedicated portal for viewing usage data, tracking deliveries, reviewing invoices, and managing account details.
Financing
How do I save money?
Delivered natural gas can save facilities up to 40% in energy costs versus alternatives such as oil and propane. XNG competitively bids your gas to all suppliers on the pipeline so that you get the best possible price with complete transparency. Since our terminals are located on interstate pipelines, we can often provide commodity pricing well below that of gas utilities.
How does XNG's pricing work?
Our pricing is simple: Demand Fee + Commodity Gas + Delivery Service.
Demand Fee: A monthly fixed fee to cover equipment lease over the contract term, which covers on-site equipment and maintenance during the contract term.
Commodity Gas: Gas is typically priced against monthly pricing on a published natural gas index representative of your location. XNG’s commodity trading team can work with you to risk manage commodity pricing including term fixed prices.
Delivery Service: A per dekatherm or per delivery charge to cover the costs of delivering gas trailers to your location.
Contract Term: Flexible, but typical contracts range from 3 to 7 seven years depending on your business needs.
How much will I pay?
Our pricing is based on the commodity gas pricing, plus our delivery fee.
- Gas is priced on a published index cost based on the pipeline.
- Customers can choose multiple procurement options, from locking in 100% of commodity costs to floating and purchasing on a daily basis, or any combination.
- Delivery fees include a fixed monthly equipment lease covering on-site equipment and maintenance during the contract term, plus a metered volume charge based on usage (the more gas used, the lower the average cost).
Can XNG help me get financing?
As your business partners, we know your organization’s finances are unique, and we will work closely with you on project financing.
What pricing options are available?
Our in-house commodity team offers flexible commodity structures, including fixed-rate contracts, risk management supply solutions, and custom pricing plans based on your business needs.
