Emergency Mobile CNG Backup for Utility Pipeline Repairs
Con Edison | Roosevelt Island, NY | Municipalities & Utilities
XNG delivered a mobile CNG solution to support gas system reliability for Roosevelt Island during pipeline upgrades, ensuring uninterrupted gas service to residents, the local school system, and the local hospital.
The Problem
Con Edison needed to replace aging pipeline risers on Roosevelt Island to meet updated pressure requirements. The system served critical infrastructure—including a hospital, school, and over 10,000 residents—making any service disruption unacceptable. With no redundancy in the gas network, the risk of pressure loss or failure during repairs required an immediate and fully reliable backup solution to keep gas flowing safely throughout the project.
The Solution
XNG deployed a New York Public Service Commission approved mobile CNG decompression skid tailored to Roosevelt Island’s low-pressure system. The setup included 24/7 on-site staffing, one trailer on the island with 30 hours of gas inventory, and off-site trailers for backup. This served as a temporary/standby energy source, allowing Con Edison to alternate riser repairs while ensuring continuous gas service.
- Custom skid designed to existing pressure specs
- 24-hour staffed operation for rapid response
- N+1 design for maximum reliability
The Results
Zero gas service interruptions during riser replacements
6-week project timeline, completed on schedule
System capacity to supply full load for ~30 hours
Compliance with Con Edison, NYFD, and NYPSC requirements
XNG’s mobile CNG system enabled Con Edison to complete critical pipeline repairs without risking service interruption on Roosevelt Island. The fully staffed installation ensured a seamless switch to backup supply as needed, while maintaining regulatory compliance with city, state, and fire safety authorities. The six-week project was delivered on time, with custom equipment and N+1 reliability built in, providing confidence and security for essential community services throughout the upgrade process.
